HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY BY Dr Obioma Nwuba of medik247

This is when the heart muscle is too thick from excessive enlargement. This obstructs the flow of blood in the heart making the heart work excessively and ineffectively.

Some people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may present with no symptoms but when symptoms arise, they'll be in form of:

Irregular heartbeat
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Fainting spells

In some, sudden death due to cardiac arrest occur during vigorous exercise due to irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)

Causes and predisposing factors:

Heredity
Family history
Hypertension
Diabetes
Thyroid disease
Heart valve problems

What should one do?

See a doctor, preferably a cardiologist.

The doctor will ask you questions, assess you physically.

He/she may send you for ECG, Echocardiogram, heart muscle biopsy, cardiac catheterization and angiography.

Treatment:

The treatment can involves the use of medications that affects the contractility of the heart.

Treatment of complications of the condition, like heart failure is also very important.

Surgery to relieve valve problems or relieve obstruction in the heart may be necessary.
